The Wild acquired Devin Setoguchi on draft day in hopes of picking up and offensive star for many years to come. He was traded for a fan favorite in Brent Burns. Arguably in the top 3 most popular Wild players with Koivu and Clutterbuck. The only way the Wild were going to let Burns go is if they could make a splash and get an offensive threat. The Wild have lacked a pure goal scoring threat since they lost Marion Gaborik via free agency in 2009. On Wednesday the team announced that Setoguchi will switch from his number 16 that he wore in San Jose to wear the number 10 for the Wild, the same number worn by Gaborik for 8 seasons. He was also the only player to wear the number 10 in franchise history. Gaborik had at least 30 goals in 5 of the 8 seasons he was in Minnesota, 42 being his career high for the Wild in the 07-08 season. Gaborik scored a total of 219 goals and had 218 assists in his 8 seasons in Minnesota, thats an average of about 27 goals per season. His numbers could have been much higher if he stayed healthy. Now that Setoguchi will be wearing number 10 and play the same position as Gaborik with Koivu as his line-mate, you can’t help but compare him to the man drafted with the teams first ever draft pick. Only time will tell if he will be the type of player that will fill the void left behind by not one player but two, the young All-Star and fan favorite Brent Burns and the best player in franchise history Marion Gaborik.
