There has been many rumors in the past connecting the Vikings and Donovan McNabb and those rumors are heating up once again. The Vikings reportedly have agreed on parameters for a deal to acquire McNabb but cannot acquire him unless they reach an agreement to restructure his contract which could take some time to work out. The proposed deal would include a 6th round pick in 2012 and a possible 6th round pick in 2013. The second 6th round pick would depend on McNabb’s performance in 2011. McNabb is due over $14M next season on his current contract and there is no way the Vikings will pay anything near that much. Its possible McNabb may not like QB situation in Minnesota and may not want to agree to a new contact with the Vikings. He also may not want to play for the amount of money Minnesota is offering. If the Vikings do end up bringing McNabb to Minnesota it will be interesting to see how Donovan feels about a backup role when the team decides Ponder is ready to start. I am not completely on board with this move because I still believe McNabb is trying to prove to the world that he is still a legitimate starter in the NFL and when Ponder is ready to start I don’t think McNabb will be happy to move to the backup role.

UPDATE: The Vikings and Redskins have agreed to the trade as noted above and the Vikings have worked out a contract with McNabb’s agent. The team is now waiting for McNabb to agree to the deal. Apparently McNabb is concerned how the situation with the Vikings was handled and also isn’t pleased about significantly lowering his salary on a short term deal. He may also be unsure about how the situation will play out with Ponder planning to compete hard to be the starter. McNabb already doesn’t like how the Vikings are handling things and this relationship hasn’t started off on a good note. Hopefully this isn’t a sign of things to come for the Vikings and McNabb.

There are also rumors that Tyler Thigpen was considering returning to the Vikings. He was another alternative the Vikings have at the QB position but it looks like he is headed to Buffalo.
