Koivu sustained a left shoulder injury in Saturday against the St. Louis Blues. He took a hard check directly on the shoulder in the open ice and skated straight for the bench holding his arm. He left the arena wearing a sling. After being evaluated by team doctors he was diagnosed with a separated shoulder and is expected to miss four to six weeks. Just last week we found out that Mikko Koivu was named to his first All-Star game. But now it looks like he won’t even be able to play. Even more importantly the Wild will lose their best player after a stretch where the team has only won 2 of their last 15 games. The team is barely hanging on to a playoff spot and the next month will be crucial for the Wild to withstand the loss of Koivu and not drop out of the playoff picture. The Wild are now without 3 of their top 6 forwards because Latendresse and Bouchard are out with post concussion symptoms. The team may look for scoring at the trade deadline if the price is right.
