Joe Coleman spent most of the year coming off the bench for the Gophers but after an 0-3 start in the Big Ten Tubby Smith decided to shake up the line-up and name him a starter. Since then, he has provided a spark for the Gophers leading them to their first 2 conference wins, both on the road. He has provided them with an emotional lift on the court and also the production this team has needed to get them over the hump. This week he has been recognized by being named the Big Ten freshman of the week. In his second start against Indiana he only scored 8 points but he provided 4 clutch free throws at the end of the game to help seal the upset over the #8 ranked Hoosiers. In his third start against Penn State he had a career night. He led the Gophers with 23 points, shooting 5-8 from the floor and showing his aggressiveness by driving to the basket and drawing fouls. After starting 0-4 in the Big Ten, the Gophers needed someone to step up and provide hope for a struggling ball club and Joe Coleman has done just that.
