The Wild have made their first trade of the year on Friday by sending Casey Wellman to the New York Rangers for Erik Christensen and a conditional 2013 seventh round pick. If Christensen re-signs with the Wild they will not receive the draft pick. Wellman, 24, was the Wild’s first big college free agent pickup. He had 7 points in 14 games for the Wild this season. His value clearly diminished on the prospect depth chart when the Wild acquired all of their top prospects in the past year. The 28 year old Christensen had just 5 points in 20 games for the Rangers this season but one thing he brings to the club is his shootout ability. He ranks 9th all-time in shootout goals with 24, 2 behind Koivu and 6 behind leader Jussi Jokinen. He will make his Wild debut on saturday centering the third line along side Powe and McMillan, he will wear #26. Wellman is expected to be sent to New York’s AHL team. This trade reminds me of a trade the Wild made in the past when they sent Benoît Pouliot to the Canadians for Guillaume Latendresse. The teams swapped underperforming offensive players in hopes that a change of scenery would improve their play. That trade turned out well for both teams, we can only hope this trade works out the same for the Wild.
