The Wild completed 4 trades in 2012 before the trade deadline passed on Monday Feb 27th. Their first trade came on February 3rd when they swapped centers with New York. The Wild sent underperforming center Wellman to the rangers for an elite shootout scoring center in Christensen. Their second trade came on February 24th, three days before the deadline, when they sent Zidlicky to the Devils. Zidlicky is an offensive minded defenseman but provided no goals for the Wild this season and did not seem to fit their new system. They received a haul for Zidlicky from the Devils including Foster, Veilleux, Palmieri, 2012 second-round pick and 2013 conditional pick. The reasoning behind this is they were able to clear Zidlicky’s cap hit off the books for next season and pick up players to help them this season (Foster and Veilleux) and in the future (Palmieri) along with a top draft pick this year and possible next year as well. On February 27th, deadline day, they were able to complete two trades. They first sent Schultz to the Oilers for Tom Gilbert, then sent Zanon to the Bruins for Steve Kampfer. These trades represent the Wild’s intent on looking for more offense from behind the blue line. Zanon and Schultz were known as stay at home defenseman that focused primarily on the defensive attack. Gilbert and Kampfer are known as being puck-moving, offensive type defenseman which the Wild think will fit their system better. They were able to get younger on defense as well. Below is a visual look at all the trades the Wild completed.
