It took until the 7th round but the Vikings finally added some depth to their group of linebackers selecting Audie Cole out of North Carolina State. Cole is likely to be just a special teams contributor his first year in the league unless Minnesota decides to put him on the practice squad. Spielman stuck with a theme of position flexibility and Cole fits that mold. He can fit as an outside or inside linebacker in Minnesota’s 4-3 defense. He also brings a lot of size to the position measuring 6’4″, 246 pounds. He was projected by as a 5th or 6th round pick so getting him in the 7th could be considered somewhat of a steal. Where he was selected doesn’t exactly matter unless he can make an impact on the team. Check out Cole’s strengths and weaknesses:

Position flexibility

Good instincts

Excellent size

Gets a little grabby when guarding TEs

Can sometimes take bad angles on ball carriers

Inconsistent tackler
