The wait is finally over, Mikael Granlund will be wearing a Wild jersey next season. Today he signed a 3 year $2.7M entry level contract. The contract also includes a $90,000 annual signing bonus and additional performance bonuses. Granlund joins a large group of young newcomers to the Wild system including Charlie Coyle, Zack Phillips, Johan Larsson, Brett Bulmer, Jason Zucker, and Jonas Brodin.

For those of you who don’t know much about Mikael Granlund, he is a 20 year old forward from Finland selected 9th overall in the 2010 NHL Draft. He has played for IFK-Helinski in the Finnish Elite League the past three seasons. In his first season as a 17 year old he finished with 40 points and was named the Elite League Rookie of the Year. Last season he tallied 51 points (20 goals and 31 assists) ranking him 6th in the league even after missing 15 games due to injury. To put his scoring skills in perspective, Mikko Koivu scored 8 points total as a 17 and 18 year old in the same league. Granlund will now join his close friend and mentor Mikko Koivu with the Wild next season. For the first time in a long time the Wild have a legitimate NHL Rookie of the Year candidate for next season and hope for the future.
