The Minnesota Gophers will be wearing new uniforms for the 2012 season and the pictures of the new helmets have been released. The rest of the uniform is scheduled to be released in early 2012. The new helmets have a matte finish instead of the glossy/shiny finish the old helmets had. The helmets also include the Gopher’s “SKI-U-MAH” slogan on the back. Here are some pictures of the new helmets that the players will be wearing next season. You can see the full uniform here.

A frightening moment at the Minnesota Gophers’ football game this evening as Jerry Kill fell to the ground with 20 seconds left in the game. The Gophers were driving down the field trailing 28-21 in the 4th quarter. They got to about the 25 yard line and had a 4th down with 20 seconds left to extend the game when Jerry Kill fell to the ground. Gopher medical staff were quick on the scene to hold Kill’s body stable as he appeared to be having a seizure. The crowd went silent and the players huddled together on their knees. It was a very scary moment to watch as everyone stood in fear and disbelief while Kill was being attended to by medical staff. After a long delay Kill was carted off the field and taken to the hospital in stable condition. By the end of the game it was confirmed that he did have a seizure. After the game team doctor Pat Smith said coach Kill has had a seizure disorder since his cancer surgery and that Kill’s vitals remained good throughout the seizure and he is stable. The team was aware of this condition and that it could happen on the sidelines. It is also reported that Kill told his team that it could happen and not to worry about it because he’ll be fine. Coach Kill had a seizure on the sidelines in 2005 as well and recovered from it. The Gophers had the difficult task of going back on the field and attempt the 4th down conversion to extend the game. They were unsuccessful in their attempt and lost the game 28-21. The loss will be overshadowed by the more important issue of Kill’s health. Our thoughts and prayers go out to him and his family for a quick recovery.

Kill makes Big signing

Really put an emphasis on big in this one (6’9″, 300 lbs). Jerry Kill has signed Jonah Pirsig, Minnesota’s 3rd best in state recruit. Combine this with WR Andre McDonald of Minnetonka and Kill has closed the borders on Minnesota’s 1st and 3rd best players. This is something previous coaches had problems doing in the past. This won’t instantly translate into wins but it does take talent to win games and if these boys can progress in will be very helpful down the road.

Eskridge

The Gophers football program announced the departure of 2 seniors in RB DeLeon Eskridge and TE Tiree Eure. Eskridge might be missed as he had about 700 yards and 7 TDs last season. Eure is best remembered for…. well not much. He finished last year with 3 catches and 47 yards. Coming in to fill the 2 rosters spots are Fort Scott Community College transfer WR Malcolm Moulton (5’11”-185lbs) and Manvel High School (Texas) QB Dexter Foreman (6’1″-210lbs). Kill expressed his desire to add depth to the wide receiver spot and is hopeful that Moulton can accomplish that. Eskridge wanted to be closer to home for personal reasons. His production will be missed as well as his senior leadership.

Breaking news is that Terrelle Pryor will be leaving Ohio State according to his attorney. This was speculated by many but now has been confirmed. This is big news for sad Gopher fans after a 3 win season. The Gophers have been dominated by Ohio State and Pryor in his starts. Even if he did return for next season, he would be facing a 5 game suspension.

What does this mean for Pryor’s future? He will most likely go into the supplemental draft. However, he is slightly aided by lockout in that he could jump in the antitrust lawsuit and attempt to enter the league via free agency. The problem with that approach is that the lockout will most likely be over before that will be successful.

A Time to Kill

Gray looks to take hold of QB job

It didn’t take MarQuies Gray long to set his sights on the starting QB job. It makes sense to get the Gophers most explosive athlete touching the ball on every play. He may be the only bright spot in the Gophers next season. Word has it that once Kill was hired as the next Gophers coach Gray was already seeking him out asking what he has to do to be the starter. That shows real maturity in the redshirt sophomore. Not much optimism is following the Gopher’s football program after a 3-9 season but Gray may be worth keeping an eye on.
